The Stonington Borrough, which heroically defended itself against the British in the war of 1812., is full of period homes, lovely shops, and great restaurants some of which you can sail right up to. .
Sailing to the west, New London is undergoing a revival with the soon to be built Coast Guard Museum and Broad River Walk. There has been an influx of new restaurants along Bank Street close to the marina and train station.
Heading south across the sound takes you to Greenport and the gateway to Shelter Island. Greenport is a bustling place and opens the way to Sag Harbor, Shelter Harbor, and Coecles Harbor. Farther to the east is Three Mile Harbor and Montauk Lake.
Heading east from mystic Block Island is a favorite sail and overnight stop. A little crowded these days but Block Island is full of activities and restaurants for sailors. There are great walks and beaches to enjoy during your stay
Napatree beach at Watch Hill is a wonderful destination for a day at the beach. A long beach for walks and wonderful surf for water sports.
Newport with it's famous cliff walk will open up the whole of Narraganset Bay. Full of history and sailing tradition it is always an exciting port for cruisers. From Newport it's a short hop to Jamestown, Bristol, Fall River
Crossing the mouth of Buzzards Bay will take you to Cuttyhunk Island, a charming little anchorage that is a joy to stay at. Watching a seaplane come in and land next to your boat is always an exciting event when staying at Cuttyhunk.
From here it is an easy hop to Martha's Vineyard and the ports of Oak Bluffs Harbor and Edgartown. Martha's Vineyard is full of places to explore and activities to participate in. There is also a wonderful transit system to move you around the whole island.
Southwest Cape Cod is full of exciting ports like Woods Hole and Hyannis Port. Woods hole has a world class institute full of educational opportunities.
Nantucket is the jewel of the Massachusetts island chain. Steeped in maritime history beginning with the whaling industry and the the shipping industry, it is now one of the favorite destinations for those who have time for a longer sail to their destination.
